Even death can’t break a father & son’s bond….Dead Heat the latest by Lisa Nowak

I’m really excited for Lisa’s latest. I saw her cover and SQUEEEEED! Lisa and I are a part of The Pacific Northwest YA Authors group and met last year at Wordstock in Portland, OR. I’ve already got my copy of Dead Heat. Hurry up and get yours!

A man who longs for a son and a boy who can’t escape his father’s violence. Even death can’t break their bond.

Alex is a machine whisperer. He can tell what’s wrong with a broken-down car with a touch. But his gift can’t save him from the brutality of his meth-addict father. For two years, Alex experienced kindness through Cole, his mentor. Now Cole’s dead, and the violence in Alex’s life is escalating.

When Cole reappears as a ghost, Alex clings to the tenuous link. Then he learns Cole might’ve sacrificed his chance to cross over. Jade, the first girl to look beyond Alex’s past, assures him Cole can reach the Other Side-if Alex escapes from his dad. But a previous terrifying attempt has convinced Alex it’s impossible. Unless he can find the courage to try, his friend may be earthbound forever.

Dead Heat blew me away. It’s a gritty ghost story interwoven with all-too-real subject matter that will make you cry for Alex, ache for Cole, and thank God for Jade. I was invested in these characters’ lives and you will be too.”

~ Stacey Wallace Benefiel, author of the Zellie Wells trilogy

In addition to being a YA author, Lisa is a retired amateur stock car racer, an accomplished cat whisperer, and a professional smartass. She writes coming-of-age books about kids in hard luck situations who learn to appreciate their own value after finding mentors who love them for who they are.

Hi everyone, Courtney Cole here.

One year ago, my book, Every Last Kiss (Book One in the Bloodstone Saga) was released into the wild.

I was so terrified that day, so afraid that everyone out there in the Reader-verse was going to hate it, that people would laugh and point at me on the street- saying “What’s the deal with that girl?  She really thinks she’s a writer?”  I might be exaggerating a little.  But I was a little terrified.

But you know what?  It turns out, people kind of liked it.  And so the rest of the Bloodstone Saga was born (Fated, With My Last Breath and My Tattered Bonds).  It’s been an exciting and crazy year, but I’m so, so happy that it has happened.  And I’m so, so thankful to all of the wonderful readers who have read my work.  I’m so grateful for every single one of you.

Which brings me to the next part.  This week, I am celebrating the book birthday of Every Last Kiss.  Today and tomorrow,, Every Last Kiss will be free on Amazon Kindle. You can find it here

Also, as a special thank you to the wonderful readers who have followed every step of Cadmus and Harmonia’s adventures, I have written a bonus novella, House of Thebes.  For the first time, you can read how Harmonia and Cadmus met…the first time.   As a thank you to YOU, my awesome and wonderful fans, it will be available for FREE on Amazon Kindle today.   You can find it here

I really hope you enjoy it.

And lastly, it would not be a birthday bash without prizes, right?   So, over the course of today and tomorrow, you will be entered to win prizes every time you tweet this on Twitter:

Today I’m welcoming fellow YA INDIE CARNIVAL AUTHOR/REVIEWER Heather Self to celebrate the cover reveal of her awesome debut novel!

Stranded on Earth four thousand years they’ve waited for the arrival of the One: some to save her, others to kill her. With her birth, the ancient prophecy could at last be fulfilled and the doorway between the worlds would open. Those who know the prophecy believe this event occurred almost eighteen years ago, and now, they’ll stop at nothing to find her.

Seventeen-year-old Eveline has lived her entire life on the move and she hates it. She knows her parents believe she’s the One, and they’ve done whatever it takes to stay one step ahead of those who want her dead. But Eveline isn’t fully convinced that her parents’ beliefs match her own. What she does believe is that Leadville, Colorado may be the chance she’s been waiting for. The chance to be somewhere safe. The chance for her to make friends and have fun. The chance to finally date a guy. The chance to be a normal girl, at least as normal as possible for someone not human.

The Lost Soul, the final book in The Raven Saga by Suzy Turner just released!

December and Lilly have got their work cut out for them. Not only are they desperately trying to figure out the identity of the Lost Soul, and track him down, they’ve also got to investigate why Powell River’s newest resident has got all of their men falling at her feet.

But when they learn that the Nephilim might be involved, it becomes clear that they’re all in extreme danger…

The stench of something rotten filled the air as the man tried to lift his heavy head. Opening his eyes, it took a moment for them to adjust to the strange dull light of a new day. Wincing, he managed to hold his head up just long enough to notice the smell belonged to a rotting corpse to his side. He heaved, but there was nothing left in his stomach. He hadn’t eaten in days.

Weak, cold and hungry, he curled into a ball on the mossy ground and sobbed.

When he no longer had the strength to even do that, he stared up at the sky; the orange and yellow hues entwined in a rainbow effect as far as his eyes could see.

The only sounds that could be heard were his rough breathing combined with the gentle whooshing of the silver trees that surrounded the deep ditch within which he found himself.

A hummingbird appeared from nowhere, hovering above him, flying up and down and around his face. The man tried to focus his eyes upon it but his vision had become blurry.

When the bird came to an abrupt halt almost touching his nose, he realised it wasn’t a bird at all.

A faint giggle erupted from the creature, making him jump.

“No, this can’t be,” he whispered, hoarsely.

The little creature with large blue wings nodded back, “Yes, it can,” she responded, “I can see you are in dire need of help. I will gather my friends and we will return to get you out of here. You will be safe. Do not worry.”
Disappearing out of sight in a flash, the man collapsed once more before he fell into a deep sleep.

YA Indie Carnival : Kiss & Tell from 13 on Halloween

The carnis are all kissing & telling today! Here’s one of my favorite kissing scenes from 13 ON HALLOWEEN. Twelve-year-old Roxie wants two things more than anything. She wants to become popular––a peacock, in Roxie Speak. And she wants a guy named Hayden, the coolest guy at school, to notice her. So, she throws her first-ever birthday party on Halloween, her thirteenth birthday, and invites all the peacocks and they all come. When they give her a gift that’s out of this world, her whole life changes and Roxie astral projects to Planet Popular. This is what happens when she gets there. 14 ON HALLOWEEN will release this summer.

I’m sitting in the middle of a parking lot at a school. In the middle of a lane with rows of cars, really nice cars, on either side of me. And right then is the first time I know, I really believe, I might never get home. And I understand what that really means more than I did before. And now I’m not so down with it. But I keep thinking that being the James T. Kirk of Peacocks will be worth it. Hayden’s older brother gives me a hand up. We walk to the school together. He holds the door to the school open and says, “We’re late.”

The next thing I know I’m sitting in class. Hayden’s older brother sits next to me. I so don’t belong here. I’m in freaking high school. A buzzer sounds after physics class and Hayden’s older brother walks up to me.

“I’ll pick you up at eight.”

“Ok,” I say because I don’t know what else to say and when I can’t think of anything to say I usually agree with everyone.

“Wait, where are we going?” I say.

“What are you kidding me?” he says and holds my hand. We walk down the hall together. And then he turns around and he holds my other hand and it happens. It just happens so fast. Not like in the movies at all, where it’s this big freaking deal or it’s during some date at a movie. Hayden’s older brother kisses me. My first kiss.

My first kiss is with a freaking doppelganger. A shadow person. But, he seems so, real. I get over it pretty quick because he tastes like vanilla ice cream and red hots. I have no idea why he tastes like vanilla ice cream and red hots but I want to kiss him again this time so I’ll remember it. The whole second kiss. Only this time the kiss is crazier. Weirder. He opens his mouth and in the middle of the kiss his tongue rolls over mine. I laugh. Because, sometimes, when I don’t know what else to do, I laugh.

“What is it?” he says.

“It tickles,” I say.

“Since when?”

“I don’t know, it just, does.”

“Roxie, you’re a riot. It’s what I love about you.” He laughs.

I’m trapped in the body of a popular girl. A way older popular girl. And I’m doing older, popular girl things. And my knees go all wobbly. I feel my forehead, because I can’t believe this is really happening, even though I know it is, but it could be a fever-induced dream instead just because of how wobbly I feel. I look around to see if there’s any trace of my attic around, like maybe I can still see the portal that sucked me in. But there isn’t anything except couples, like us, talking in whispers and a bunch of jocks running through the hall. They slap high-fives to Hayden’s brother.

“Hayden, dude.”

Hayden. No way. I kissed Hayden? If this guy is Hayden, then it’s years from now. I mean years from eighth grade. And we’re dating.

Magic of Music: Alicia McCalla’s Breaking Free Soundtrack Adds Heart and Soul

I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Alicia and her fiction through her amazing blog Fantasy, Futuristic, and Paranormal Stories in Color and am thrilled to have her guest posting on Laurasmagicday today. Be sure to check out her blog this week for her upcoming giveaway!

This year, my son, Asante McCalla, turned 18-years old. It was a heart filled moment. As parents, we watch our young grow to maturity or adulthood in the blink of an eye.  I admit that my child has helped me grow. There’s something about that connection, that bond between a mother and child that’s so important, powerful—magical.

When I wrote Breaking Free, it was a 700-paged manuscript about the journey of how a teen girl attempts to save her mother from an evil mind swiping procedure.  As the story came to life, I realized that it was more than a dystopian science fiction story, it was about reuniting a broken family, healing familial pain, and a child bringing salvation to her parents.

Because I’ve worked with teens, I knew that I needed something to bring the magnitude of this out so that teen readers had an inroad into this powerful concept.  Little did I know, that my child would bring salvation to me.

Asante and I have struggled over what I want him to be as a son and what he wants me to be as a mother.  On some occasions, it has been difficult and others, I shed tears of joy and pride. Asante has become an independent thinker and has strong talent.

When Asante created, wrote, and produced the soundtrack for Breaking Free with his group, Newsity, the story came alive for me in a way that I didn’t expect.  The song touched me and brought tears to my eyes. Keep Moving evoked the magic of the story with the subtle rap beat, theme connected lyrics, and sharply sung vocals.  My baby boy and his friends brought XJ to life in 4 minutes.  Asante made the story real for teens.

Today is a monumental occasion for me. Breaking Free is now available for immediate download but as a very proud parent, I am happy to say that my son’s soundtrack is awesome!  I hope that readers will listen to Asante’s song and catch the magical heart and soul of Breaking Free.

Alicia McCalla writes for both young adults and adults with her brand of multicultural science fiction, urban fantasy, and futurism. Her debut novel, Breaking Free is available for immediate download.  The Breaking Free theme song created by Asante McCalla is available for immediate download on itunes and Amazon. 16 year old Karlie has had a pretty normal life… But when her Mom dies she is forced to move over 1,000 miles away to live with her Dad. That’s when things start getting weird. She can’t explain the earthquakes that nobody else feels, or why she no longer sleeps. But most of all she doesn’t know why she trusts Shane so much, even though his Dad wants her dead. Suddenly, Karlie’s normal life is turned upside down and she enters a world she never dreamed could really exist.

“Can I buy you a drink?” I heard a voice from behind me. I quickly turned around to find a 20-something year old guy standing inches away from me. His breath smelled like alcohol, I tried to discretely cover my nose.

“No thanks, I don’t drink.” With that I turned around and tried to ignore him. I suddenly wondered where everybody ran off to. I gazed at the fast growing crowd for sign of anybody.

The guy, full of persistence, quickly came and stood in front of me. “Oh come on, I’m hurt. You’re going to spoil all my fun.” Continue reading Excerpt from new release When Destiny Knocks by Heather White & Giveaway!
