Teaser Tuesday: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
Opens at Nightfall
Closes at Dawn
“What kind of cicrcus is only open at night?” people ask. No one has a proper answer, yet as dusk approaches there is a substantial crowd of spectators gathering outside the gates.
You are among them, of course.
-From The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.Written in rich, seductive prose, this spell-casting novel is a feast for the senses and the heart.

  1. Wow. Is that written in second person?

I don’t have my current book nearby, but I did grab the one I recently finished.

    On a Pale Horse
    by Piers Anthony

He dropped the baby soul off with the receptionist on the way out. “Oh good!” she said, this time showing some human animation. “We need new personnel!”

    1. Mckenzie,
The prologue is written in second person. I’ve just dived in, but I believe the rest of the book is written in third. There may be occasional second person references, I’m not sure yet 🙂 I’ll keep ya posted!

Wow. Interesting teaser! I’m going to check that book out. Thanks for sharing!

  2. First, I have to say I LOVED The Night Circus. It will forever hold a special place in my heart next to The Wizard of Oz and Willie Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. They are all stories which allow the imagination to take over and run free.

Second, I’m knee deep in the editing of Guardians of the Cross due to be released 12/24, so my teaser will be from it:

As soon as he ended the call, I slid down the wall to the floor, pulling my knees to my chattering chin. I’d forgotten Brody was on the other side of the door demanding entrance until he came crashing into the room.

Finally, have a great Thanksgiving, Laura!

    1. T,
🙂 So excited for the release of Guardians of the Cross! Thanks for sharing. I love the tension in these sentences, I need more!

I’m enjoying The Night Circus so much. I’ve just started reading it:) Happy to hear you loved it so much. I can’t wait to get back to it after all my baking and NaNo-ing…;) It’s my little reward. And a VERY Happy Thanksgiving to you too:) *waves* #heresavirtualpieceofpecanpie
