YA Indie Carnival: My favorite character to write? 13 on Halloween’s Roxie!

Hands down it has to be Roxie a snarky, saavy, hilarious twelve-turning-thirteen-year-old from 13 on Halloween. Her ideas about luck & popularity are seen through the animal kingdom. She uses humor and her own unique language to understand her changing world and her role in it. It’s what I love about her. She is a strong girl who wants two things: to be like Adrianne, the popular girl in school; and to have Hayden, the boy she likes, notice her. Roxie’s 13th birthday wish comes true in hilariously scary ways! Here’s an excerpt.

I got the idea for Roxie when my friends always laughed at the way I talk. I would say things like I hamster. Or, I squirrel. Or, I gopher. I use animals as verbs. And then I got to thinking that it would be fun to use this same idea to explore a girl who sees her life through the animal world. And so, Roxie was born! I had a blast writing her and I laughed a lot. I hope you do too:)

Will you be in Portland, OR tonight? I’m starting my first book tour, The Rain Boots Required Young Adult Book Tour! squueee! I’ve got some pretty cute rain boots too:) I haven’t worn rain boots in a coons age. I’ll be at the West Linn Library 1595 Burns Street, West Linn, Oregon tonight from 6:30-8:15 talking about “The magic in magical realism.” I’ll be there with my Rain Boot comadres: Stacey Wallace Benefiel, Angela Carlie, Lisa Nowak, and Rebecca Knight.

Here’s a shoutout to my fellow carnis:)

  1. Thanks for sharing, Laura. I’ve lived through these types of drama’s with my daughter. I’m now wondering what it will be like when my son becomes a teenager. *YIKES*

    1. hee-hee. I MISS TEENAGERS!!! I love my kids in their twenties too. And I never thought I’d ever say it in a million years, but teens will always have a very special place in my heart:)

    1. AW, thanks Patti! I’m so excited about this book. Roxie is so much fun to hang with:) And she’s good in tight spots, like ya know, astral projecting and with doppelgangers and stuff…thanks for swinging by!

    1. Thanks Cidney! Welcome to the carnival:) I’m so happy you joined this week. Looking forward to more of your posts. I loved putting together this trailer it was so much fun. And yes, we desperately needed a horse whisperer at this carnival, I mean before you came on board they were always getting out and running wild and it really made our finale so hard to pull-off. Thank goodness you’re here!
